Our Top Picks for the Best Garden Catalogs

Waiting for spring to come? Get an early preview by perusing through the wealth of gardening catalogs available both online and in print. They're a great resource for landscape design inspiration, seed and plant information, plus familiarizing yourself with varieties and cultivars new to you. Here are some of our favorites:

Bountiful Gardens (bountifulgardens.org)

Certified as an Organic Handler and based in Willits, California, this 30-year old, non-profit seed organization sells only non-chemical treated, open-pollinated, non-GMO heirloom garden seeds. Including (but not limited to) wildflowers, vegetables, grains, cover and compost crops and more. They also offer books and videos on sustainable mini-farming techniques, organic gardening information and a curated selection of favorite garden tools.

Brecks (brecks.com)

Tulips bring swaths of brilliant color to the spring garden, and Brecks has long since been an invaluable resource for an immense variety of bulb choices. Brecks has shipped Dutch tulip bulbs directly from Holland since 1818, and is proud to be the largest U.S. importer of Dutch flower bulbs

Burpee (burpee.com)

Founded in Philadelphia in 1881, Burpee is one of the largest seed companies today, and still operates out of the Philadelphia area. It offers a wide variety of both hybrid and heirloom seeds for all growing zones, including flowers, vegetables and herbs, along with plants and garden supplies.

Gurneys Seed & Nursery (gurneys.com)

A trusted source for all types of seeds and nursery needs since 1866, Gurneys is a tremendous resource for vegetable seeds and plants, fruit trees, shrubs, perennials, flower seeds and bulbs.

Jackson & Perkins (jacksonandperkins.com)

Renown for their award-winning roses for over a century, Jackson & Perkins' catalog also includes easy-to-care-for perennial plants, garden accents and tools. Among rose varieties are cherished favorites along with exclusive options you won't find anywhere else.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds (rareseeds.com)

This catalog is not only loaded with great old-time seed varieties but also with some unusual edibles like the Jelly Melon (a cucumber-like fruit from Africa) and the Chinese Red Noodle Bean. The large catalog has stunning photography and is a great pictorial resource for garden inspiration. Owners Jere and Emilee Gettle are committed to supplying the world's poorest countries with seeds, as they do for school gardens and other educational projects here at home.

Seed Savers Exchange (seedsavers.org)

In the last century or so, the world has lost 75% of its edible plant varieties. Seed Savers Exchange conserves biodiversity by maintaining a collection of over 20,000 different varieties of heirloom and open-pollinated vegetable, herb and plants, including over 1,000 varieties of heritage apple trees. The bulk of their seed collection is preserved in an underground freezer vault at Heritage Farm.

Territorial Seed Company (territorialseed.com)

Are you a veggie gardener looking for a great selection of seed options? Be sure to check out the Territorial Seed Company's catalog, filled with excellent varieties of both heirloom seeds and the latest, greatest hybrids.

White Flower Farm (whiteflowerfarm.com)

This family-owned nursery in Litchfield, Connecticut has been in operation since 1950, growing a wide range of ornamental plant varieties, and delivering them to gardeners all over the country. Be sure to visit the grounds to find creative inspiration along with tried-and-true plantings that can thrive in our similar planting zone.
